Olympus Concepts

Olympus Concepts is the organization behind ocScribe, podiatry’s first hands free AI scribe.

Starting as a conversation between friends, Olympus Concepts was born from Dr. Kelli Iceman’s need to better serve her patients. In small, rural practices, medical practitioners have to spin too many plates, and the most crucial of those are the ones they bring into the patient room with them. Dr. Iceman realized she was too focused on taking notes and not enough time engaging patients. We saw this as an opportunity to research and develop tools based on artificial intelligence.

The Olympus Concepts branding needed to live equally in the worlds of medicine, technology, and artificial intelligence. In a landscape of AI brands attempting to feel more human, we leaned into the honesty behind the aesthetics. We established a strong icon that could be incorporated into the product line.

ocScribe is a hands-free transcription app, turning any mobile device into a hot mic. After patients give consent to audio recording, physicians can start a patient encounter in the app and record the entire conversation. ocScribe would then automatically convert the conversation into medical notes and send them to a web-hosted account, accessible by the physician on any device with internet.

The user flow and interface prioritized utility and functionality over anything else. Our goal in developing the mobile app was to give physicians the ability to launch a patient encounter with as few button presses as possible, all while prioritizing patient privacy and HIPAA compliance.

After testing and iteration, we achieved a UX flow that allowed encounter recording in only 3 button presses.

The biggest challenge of the project was the platform management. ocScribe required a mobile experience, a web experience, and then account management for individual users and hospital administration that would want to manage user groups. We developed a robust platform that allowed for all of the above, while prioritizing privacy and clarity.

After researching and developing ocScribe and managing Olympus Concepts, having the opportunity to sit as their Creative Director, the team and I decided to sunset the platform. We were early to market, but we didn’t have the backing of some of the bigger competitors, making moving in the space slower than we would have preferred.

In 2 years, we were able to work with hundreds of doctors, processeing over 100,000 patient encounters. ocScribe saved physicians on average 2 hours daily from admin duties.
