Livio

Designing mobile and in-vehicle experiences.

Livio is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Ford Motor Company and the project maintainer for SmartDeviceLink. They are a team of developers dedicated to bringing mobile experiences into vehicles.

As their interaction designer, I was responsible for researching and designing experiences for mobile, embedded, and web platforms. This included proofs of concept for CES, tools to be used by developers around the globe, and our own portfolio apps.

CES Design

Every year, the team at Livio would build experiences to showcase our software on the show floor of the Consumers Electronics Show in Las Vegas. As the lead designer, I would research and design each proof of concept application, spanning mobile, in-vehicle, and web platforms.

Alongside the conceptual applications, I would also serve as Livio’s event creative director, designing the booth layout and graphics, vehicle wraps, merchandise, attire, and marketing assets.

See below for showcase of each year.

CES 2018

Our 2018 demo allowed audience members to call ride sharing services. Once connected with the driver and vehicle, the user would be given remote control over the vehicle entertainment and climate settings.

CES 2019

Our 2019 demo let vehicles learn driver habits and manage fleets. Since so many of our driving habits are repeating patterns, we built a concept around those. Based on traffic and weather patterns, the vehicle could place a coffee order at the right time, and manage deliveries.
With each vehicle and mobile interaction, I designed a web component that would respond in real time to orders and deliveries.

CES 2022

Our 2022 demo was a showcase of our open source UI, titled Generic HMI. I designed a full platform on a raspberry pi, with prototype apps for nav, weather, and media.

Generic IVI

As part of Livio’s open source project, SmartDeviceLink, we wanted to give a templated UI to allow developers a starting point for migrating their applications to in-vehicle experiences. I used a survey of our most common app partners to guide which templates to support, landing on views that could be used for navigation, weather, media, and general lists.

I designed each screen in accordance with road guidelines, ensuring each action met Federal Highway Administration standards.

Along with the Generic IVI, we wanted to offer the developers UI elements they could call without having to design them. I designed a library of over 180 vector open source icons. Each is part of the larger SDL project, and can be accessed through its project page.

Livio Music

Livio Music is a portfolio piece of Livio’s, showcasing the capabilities and best practices of SmartDeviceLink. Originally designed as a wrapper for Apple Music, we found an audience of folks that wanted an in-vehicle experience for their streaming without wanting to rely on Apple CarPlay.

The application is available for iPhone and iPads. See more at music.livio.io.
